I’m currently studying Criminology, Economics, and Photography at Imberhorne Sixth Form. This week, I’ve had the opportunity to work with Richard at Branding Box to gain first-hand experience in the digital marketing industry.

Exploring the Digital Marketing Industry:
Throughout the week, I explored the types of social media content that Branding Box produces and learnt how this contributes to a company’s overall marketing strategy. Richard introduced me to Canva, a design tool for creating eye-catching and compelling visual content for different media platforms.
One of the most surprising things I discovered is how much thought and detail go into every aspect of digital marketing behind the scenes. A great deal of technical skill is involved in designing a single post or building a website that appears at the top of Google search results. It’s not only about creativity; it also takes strategy, technical skill, and a strong attention to detail.
What I got involved in during work experience:
Designing with Canva
I started by creating simple social media posts based on a familiar topic. Once I was confident enough with using Canva, I worked on posts for two of Branding Box’s clients. I learnt how to structure a post effectively and adapt content to suit different audiences.
Attending a Client Meeting
On my third day, I joined Richard at a meeting with the Haywards Heath Town Council to discuss their website. This was a great opportunity to observe how professionals present ideas and communicate with clients. I also practised my note-taking, focusing on summarising key points quickly and clearly.
Competitor Research
On my last day, I carried out research on other marketing companies and analysed their websites. I identified effective features and design ideas that could help inform upcoming improvements to the Branding Box website.
Overall...
This week has given me a much better understanding of what a career in digital marketing might involve. It’s an industry that combines creativity with practical skills and constant learning. I’ve really enjoyed the experience, and it’s something I will definitely consider as a path after sixth form.
